5 TYPES OF BONES

Bones are found in many different shapes and sizes and they

are normally classified according to their shape - long,

short, flat, irregular or sesamoid. There are long bones

wihch are slightly curved for strength with long narrow

shafts with knobbly ends. Short bones tend to be spongy,

are most commonly found in the hands and feet. Flat bones

are plate like: flat and thin, and highly protective, often

protecting vital organs of the body from injury.  Irregular

bones, the name says it all, they are oddly shaped bones

such as the bones in the vertabrae. The sesamoid bones are

unusual bones, they are small and flat bones wrapped within

tendons that move over bony surfaces.
